About me

I’ve always been fascinated by the infinite variety of colours and textures that surround us. Like many of us, I loved art as a child and continued to paint as a hobby when I thought my school studies couldn’t include something as “frivolous” as art.

Visiting Italy and Austria as a teenager and seeing paintings from the Baroque was a revelation. For years after, I tried to capture a little of their dramatic rendering of light and shadow – basically painting in monochrome. In recent years, my focus has been on colour and the endless combinations of hues, pigments and effects that I can achieve with paint, and a recent change to a limited selection of modern, powerful, synthetic pigments has opened up new avenues to explore.

Continual experimentation

I’m interested in a wide range of subjects and believe that a good understanding of painting materials and practice should enable you to tackle just about any new subject, after a bit of experimentation. Having said that, I’m drawn to dramatic lighting, especially sunlit scenes – probably due to the Baroque influence. I view composition as a matter of taste and story-telling that you develop over time – I’m not a believer in formulae, and I’m influenced and hugely impressed by the work of  artists, such as James Gurney, Michael J Smith and Mark Carder.

Realism with high quality acrylics

I use high quality acrylics – oils enable a wonderful subtlety but I just can’t wait for them to dry and acrylics are amazingly versatile and durable. My paintings vary from photorealism to a looser realistic style depending on the subject, the approach I am experimenting with and the preferences of the customer. However, realism isn’t the end in itself. What I’m trying to achieve is a work that is engaging, significant and evocative for the viewer.

England and Austria

Originally from England, I divide my time between the UK and Austria, where I live with my partner and two beagles.

Apart from painting for customers, I also sell prints and hold art classes on location for private customers
